Linville Gorge is amazing in its own right, and this past weekend I had the opportunity to see it from a new perspective.  I’ve always been a stargazer; however, we live in a world filled with artificial light. Growing up next to a big city, you get tons of light pollution and as a kid I could only see the brightest stars in the night sky from my hometown. I’m actually not sure if I’d ever seen the Milky Way with my naked eye before this past Saturday.

Linville Wilderness Gorge offered a nice escape from the city lights–for the most part. Even though we were out in the middle of the woods, lights from the nearby towns were visible. Even so, I’ve never been so excited to be up at 4:00 a.m. in my life 🙂 Enjoy admiring the vastness of the universe…

IMG_6992The photograph below was shot with a 17mm to get that fun ultra-wide angle. For those who have been to Linville Wilderness Gorge, this photo was taken from Wiseman’s Overlook or Wiseman’s View. You can see Table Rock off to the left in this image:IMG_7027IMG_7000

I just loved catching some of the meteorites that decided to make an appearance. I believe the bright “star” in the right-hand side of the frame is a planet.IMG_7011

After a while, we decided to play with some light painting(another blog post with more light painting from this trip to come soon).

Needless to say, we didn’t stay up for the actual sunrise. Yet, it was such a great session and I can’t wait to catch the Milky Way from different locales. Happy stargazing!
